Blue and Yellow Flags: Countries, EU and US States

Country flags

The country examples below include Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose white stars add a third color.

Ukraine

Two equal horizontal bands, blue above yellow, identify Ukraine. There is no cross, disk or emblem on the national flag.

Sweden

Sweden replaces the stripes with a yellow Nordic cross on blue. The upright part of the cross sits toward the flagpole rather than in the center.

Swedish Flag Day falls on 6 June, which is also Sweden’s National Day.

Palau

A single yellow disk sits slightly toward the flagpole on a light-blue field. The disk represents the full moon, according to the Palauan government’s flag description.

Kazakhstan

Here the round symbol is a sun, with an eagle below it. A vertical ornamental band runs beside the flagpole. The official description specifies gold for the sun, eagle and ornament against a blue field.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

The yellow triangle and diagonal line of white stars are the distinguishing features. The star pattern extends beyond the top and bottom edges, leaving a partial star at each end.

The diagonal contrasts with the circle on the European flag below.

The European flag

The European Union is not a country. Its flag belongs here as a separate emblem: twelve gold stars form a circle on blue.

The number stays at twelve regardless of EU membership. The Council of Europe chose the design in 1955; European Communities leaders adopted it in 1985.

Blue and gold US state flags

Alaska

Eight gold stars mark the Big Dipper and the North Star. This is a sky pattern rather than a count of states: seven stars form the Dipper, with the larger North Star apart from them.

Indiana

Indiana adds a torch at the center. Its nineteen stars have a different purpose from Alaska’s:

• Thirteen outer stars represent the original states.
• Five inner stars represent the next states admitted.
• The larger star above the torch represents Indiana, the nineteenth state.

Oregon

Oregon is worth checking on both sides. The front carries the state shield, thirty-three stars, the state name and 1859; the reverse shows a beaver. State law specifies gold designs on navy blue.
