Northern Lights
The northern lights, or aurora borealis, form when energetic particles excite gases high in Earth’s atmosphere. Oxygen gives off green and red light, while nitrogen produces blue and pink, as NASA’s aurora guide explains.
In the Southern Hemisphere, including New Zealand, the display is called aurora australis, or the southern lights.
Milky Way
The Milky Way is our home galaxy, a barred spiral of stars, gas and dust. The second palette below stays with blue-violet and muted pink-purple, leaving out the table’s bright green and yellow.
