What is Vaporwave?

Vaporwave is often described as a fusion of electronic music and chillwave, with elements of hip hop, synth-pop, and ambient music. The genre is named for its heavy use of vaporwave-style imagery and iconography, which typically features neon-lit cityscapes and palm trees, as well as Japanese characters and references to 1980s and 1990s pop culture.
The genre has been associated with the rise of the "alt-right" and white nationalism, due to its use of right-wing imagery and references to Nazi Germany and other fascist regimes.
However, vaporwave is also often used as a form of satire, pastiche, or camp, and many artists have rejected any political associations.
Vaporwave music artists
One of the most popular vaporwave artists is Vektroid, the solo project of musician Ramona Xavier. Xavier's music is often dreamlike and ethereal, with delicate melodies floating over hazy beats. Her best-known work is the 2010 album Floral Shoppe, which was reissued in 2015 with new artwork and remastered tracks.
Another artist making excellent vaporwave is Saint Pepsi, the project of New York-based musician Ryan DeRobertis. DeRobertis creates upbeat, synth-heavy tracks that are heavily influenced by '80s pop music. He's best known for his 2013 single "Hit Vibes," which was included on his excellent debut album Skylar Spence.
