Low light makes Black and Burgundy appear closer than they really are. Increase the exposure and the difference becomes structural: Black lifts toward Dim Gray without gaining hue, while Burgundy keeps a dark red-purple core.
Maroon, Dark Red, and Fire Brick reveal that core at increasing intensity. The black side stays neutral; the burgundy side keeps producing red. What begins as a pair of near-dark surfaces ends as two clearly different color behaviors.
