From a distance, the sea looks blue. A closer reading is less tidy.

NASA ocean imagery records blue-green water shaped by sediment and phytoplankton, with some blooms appearing milky blue, green, red, or brown. Navy and Steel Blue hold the open-water end of this set. Cadet Blue, Medium Turquoise, and Aquamarine follow shallower or brighter water; Sea Green marks the pull of plant life. These are named color references, not measurements from one coastline.
