Not every glow comes from the same process. In dark water, violet, blue, and cyan suggest bioluminescent flashes, with blue traveling especially well through the sea.

Green and yellow move the eye toward higher apparent brightness. Orange-red belongs to another phenomenon entirely: the warm emission of neon gas inside an electrified glass tube.
