Magma Colors reads from the outside of molten rock toward its heat. Basalt Crust begins nearly black, while Cooling Fracture and Dark Incandescence suggest the red energy still visible through a hardening surface.

Vent Red, Molten Orange, and Thermal Core move closer to active material.

The sequence is a visual cooling clock rather than a temperature chart: USGS places magma broadly between 800 and 1200 degrees Celsius, with composition affecting the actual temperature.

Below the surface the material is magma; after eruption it is lava. Exposed lava can glow red or orange before cooling toward dark red, gray, and black. Let the dark tones dominate large surfaces and reserve the brightest pair for compact signals that need maximum energy.
