Historic bookbinders pressed heated stamps into prepared leather so gold leaf would remain inside the impression. The decoration began as pressure, not sparkle.
The result is deliberately uneven.
Most of the cover remains leather, moving between Rebecca Purple, Indigo, and Medium Purple as the surface bends and wears.
Gold occupies only the stamped lines; Dark Goldenrod and Pale Goldenrod describe those same lines outside direct reflection.
