Nigeria
The Nigerian flag is composed of green-white-green bands symbolizing farming wealth and national union.
It was designed by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, a Nigerian student in London, at a time when Nigeria was set to gain full independence from the UK.
Selected from nearly 3,000 entries, the flag stands out for its simple simplicity and powerfully symbolic design. Green stands for the country's agricultural bounty and natural resources, while white stands for unity and peace.
Akinkunmi's white stripe in the original concept also depicted a red sun representing divine protection and guidance, but this was removed by the committee to keep the design simple.
The flag was officially adopted on October 1, 1960, Nigeria's independence day, marking a new chapter in the country's history.
